China Computer Federation (CCF) announced “2024 Award for Overseas Outstanding Contribution” on 23 September 2024. The Award is to honor individuals or organization abroad for their great contribution to CCF and China computer industry on scientific research, academic communication, talents cultivation and international cooperation.
Professor Tim CHENG, Vice-President for Research and Development at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Center Director of AI Chip Center for Emerging Smart Systems (ACCESS), has been awarded this year's "CCF Award for Overseas Outstanding Contribution", recognizing his contributions to international EDA (Electronic Design Automation) field. Professor CHUA Tat-Seng from the National University of Singapore also received this honor.
The CCF Awards Committee has cited Prof. Cheng as an outstanding scientist in the international EDA field, acknowledging his pioneering contributions to integrated circuit testing and design verification. His dedication to cultivating talent within the domestic computer field, through both course instruction and reciprocal academic exchanges, and his active participation in and organization of domestic EDA conferences, have resulted in significant advancements in industry-academia-research cooperation.
Prof. Cheng is an internationally leading researcher with excellent experience in fostering cross-disciplinary research collaboration, a world authority in the field of VLSI testing and design verification, as well as an impactful contributor across a wide range of research areas including design and automation of electronic and photonic systems, computer vision, and medical image analysis. He had previously served as Director of the US Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) Center for 3D Hybrid Circuits. Prof. Cheng has published more than 500 technical papers, co-authored five books, held 12 US patents, and transferred several of his inventions into successful commercial products. He is a Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and his works are of high impact with due recognition from the field, including more than 10 best paper awards in major conferences and journals and Pan Wen Yuan Foundation Award for Outstanding Research.
