Fostering Collaboration, Igniting Innovation: The ACCESS Summer School Concluded with Resounding Success

2024-07-25

The first ACCESS Summer School has received overwhelming feedback from research team members and postgraduate students of the ACCESS Community! The 8-week program, concluded on 25 Jul 2024 with 4 master lectures, 2 workshops and 2 sharing sessions, has provided a cohesive platform to boost innovation in advancing research and ideas exchange, as well to further promote the international collaboration amongst various research teams in multi-disciplinary aspects of AI/ IC design.

The grand event of ACCESS Summer School 2024 was a master lecture delivered by Prof. Mansun CHAN, Associate Center Director of ACCESS and Alex Wong Siu Wah Gigi Wong Fook Chi Professor of Engineering, The Hong Kong University Of Science and Technology (HKUST).  In his talk themed "From Lab to Venture: The Importance of Leadership Skills in Entrepreneurship", Prof. CHAN shared his insights on how effective leadership can drive innovation, foster collaboration, and navigate the challenges of commercialization. He delved into the key strategies and qualities that entrepreneurs need to cultivate to successfully bridge the gap between the laboratory and the marketplace. Our researchers and engineers were deeply engaged and inspired by this thought-provoking session.

ACCESS was also honored to have invited distinguished scholars as guest speakers for the other three master lectures of the summer program, including Prof. Sharon HU from University of Notre Dame (UND), one of our partner universities on the topic “Multi-Bit Content-Addressable Non-Volatile Memories”, Prof. Jason CONG from the UCLA on “Space and Time Co-Optimization in Electronic Design Automation”, and Prof. Masato MOTOMURA from the Tokyo Institute of Technology on “Algorithm-Architecture Centric Approach Towards Energy Efficient AI Hardware”.  In addition, Prof. Fengbin TU and Prof. Zhiyao XIE from the HKUST, our host university, had partnered a team of faculties from the various mainland universities to carry out ACCESS-HKUST joint workshops on “Large-scale AI Chip and System Workshop” and “HKUST-HKUST(GZ) Joint EDA Workshop” respectively, sharing with our research team and provoking insights on the latest scientific knowledge about compute-in-memory and design automation.  Last but not least were two interactive sharing sessions delivered by postgraduate students from UND where they introduced and discussed their research work with the ACCESS researchers and engineers, making use of the opportunity to explore various perspectives to address potential research challenges.  All regard the sessions as fruitful and practical.

ACCESS looks forward to our next Summer School, for further cultivating knowledge integration, collaboration, and innovation within the Center’s vibrant research community.
