ACCESS Wins Two Gold Medals at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

2025-04-24

AI Chip Center for Emerging Smart Systems (ACCESS) is proud to announce its achievement of two Gold Medals at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025, a testament to its pioneering innovations in AI technology. These prestigious accolades highlight ACCESS’s commitment to addressing critical challenges in next-generation AI systems.

The first award, a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury, was granted for the “Digital Compute-In-Memory (DCIM) Enabled Portable Genome Analysis Prototype,” a breakthrough that merges memory and computing logic to revolutionize AI chip efficiency. This innovation introduces AutoDCIM, the first EDA tool for automated DCIM design, enabling rapid deployment of DCIM-based solutions; the first Transformer-based software architecture for DNA consensus finding; and a portable DCIM-based genome analysis prototype that achieves 5.61× higher throughput and 301.6× greater energy efficiency compared to an off-the-shelf AI chip product.

The second Gold Medal recognized the “Ultra-High Energy Efficiency AI Accelerator for Portable Healthcare Devices.” This prototype leverages a CNN-Transformer AI accelerator to enable real-time, high-accuracy clinical image segmentation on portable devices. It achieves 10× greater energy efficiency than conventional digital chips, enhancing medical imaging diagnostics in resource-constrained settings.

The recognition at Geneva—the world’s largest invention exhibition—not only celebrates our current breakthroughs but also fuels our mission to develop transformative solutions for global challenges. ACCESS, wholly owned by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), is one of the members under HKUST team this year. The team won a total of 38 awards, including two special grand prizes, 22 Gold Medals (of which seven received Congratulations of the Jury), and multiple Silver and Bronze Medals.  Please refer here for details of all HKUST’s inventions showcased at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. ACCESS remains committed to driving sustainable progress and improving lives through AI innovation. We look forward to sharing more groundbreaking developments that shape the future of technology.

The 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva – the world’s largest annual event devoted exclusively to inventions, showcased nearly 1,050 submissions from 35 countries and regions of inventors, universities, institutes and companies during April 9 to 13 this year in Switzerland, among which 299 inventions come from Hong Kong.
