Job Description

 

Responsibilities

The Chief Researcher will be involved in the development of multiple research programs and projects in the Center and will co-lead one of the technology transfer programs, with the objective of founding and managing a start-up company spined-off from the Center. He/she will assist the Director and Executive Director overseeing all aspects of research management, scientific technological development, and operations for multiple research projects or research facilities. He/she will take research and development duties, in addition to co-lead business plan development, customer engagement, commercialization project application/execution, and fund raising.

The Chief Researcher is required to station and work at the Hong Kong Science Park, with occasional business travels to the HKUST Clear Water Bay Campus and other Collaborating Universities and stakeholders of the Center when needed.

Requirements

Applicants should have at least 8 years post-qualification experience in R&D for those with a PhD degree, and 10 years for those with a Master's degree, preferably in electronics, electrical or computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent. In-depth knowledge and experience in integrated circuit design, design automation or broadly microelectronics are essential. Experience in senior management roles within commercial enterprises and/or as CEO, CTO, or co-founder of start-ups in the high-tech sector is highly desirable. Specifically, R&D as well as production experiences in the following area(s) with relevance to (but not limited to) the design of AI chips and AI applications are preferred:

  • Compute-in-memory (CIM), non-volatile memory (CVM), and 3D integration for acceleration of computing;
  • AI algorithm and architectural co-design; large AI model optimization for hardware implementation; design and implementation of chip/hardware accelerators for AI applications;
  • ASIC design; FPGA prototyping; building block/IP design for high-performance, high-reliable, and low-power IC implementations;
  • Electronics design automation (such as modelling, simulation, physical design, logic/high-level synthesis, verification, testing, design for manufacturability, etc.); compilation, simulation and hardware-aware finetune/optimization of large AI models;
  • Hardware-accelerated AI applications in areas of embodied AI, medical/healthcare, smart city/digital economy/financial computing, AR/VR/XR, etc.

The ideal candidate should have strong R&D capability, business acumen, and superior interpersonal and organizational skills. He/She should be an excellent team leader with a strong sense of responsibility, ability to multi-task and work independently, and a good command of written and spoken English. Outstanding verbal, written and presentation skills are also required.

Terms of Appointment

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.
